How to Decorate with Toile So It Looks Traditional (Not Busy)

1) Choose the right scale

3) Use one “hero toile” per room

If you want it to feel elevated, do one hero toile and let the rest be supporting cast (stripes, solids, small checks, textured linen). I recommend never mixing two toiles or a toile with another busy pattern like a chintz or floral.

Is toile out of style?

Toile is a heritage pattern. It never goes out of style in traditional homes. Does “traditional” go out of style elsewhere? Depends on who you ask, but in my opinion, you can count on it when trends come and go. It’s having a major moment in 2026, though, so go for it either way! I love to take traditional fabrics and use them in contemporary ways. For example, if modern is more your vibe, but you love toile, you can use it to upholster a piece with clean lines for instant interest. Traditional toile decor doesn’t have to mean boring or outdated.

Can I mix toile with other patterns?

Yes—pair it with stripes, solids, small checks, and layered, textured neutrals. Keep the toile as the “story pattern.” Use as much or as little as you’re comfortable with. I love a toile-heavy room in guest rooms, half baths, etc. Ticking stripe and gingham are classic patterns to pair with toile that never go out of style. If you’re shy about the toile, go heavy on the ticking stripe with toile accents. It’s a much quieter pattern.
